About Anhydrous Calcium Chloride
Anhydrous calcium chloride is one of a few anhydrous inorganic salts that easily form a hydrate. The ability to form a hydrate is important because it permits anhydrous calcium chloride to be used to remove little bits of water from any organic solution. Cautionary Note: The formed hydrates are not very stable, which means they must be removed before a dried solution created from them is heated.
Anhydrous calcium chloride used to be the basis for the production of calcium. This was achieved by electrolysis. Now, at least commercially, most calcium is produced by the reduction of lime via aluminum.
Uses of Anhydrous Calcium Chloride
There are many uses for anhydrous calcium chloride, many in the construction industry, others for more domestic purposes. Following are a few.
Using Anhydrous Calcium Chloride in Home Aquariums: Many aquarium owners use anhydrous calcium chloride to help raise calcium levels in the water. In most aquariums, over time, the calcium levels will decrease and require a boost. Anhydrous calcium chloride is just the substance to get the aquarium back to the appropriate calcium range.
Please note, anhydrous calcium chloride can be harmful to the aquarium's inhabitants if not used judiciously (ie, sparingly). There are a number of other substances that can be used to heighten calcium levels in your aquarium. Whichever one you use, be sure to read the label and follow the directions carefully lest you cause harm to your aquatic life.
Using Anhydrous Calcium Chloride in Concrete: Anhydrous calcium chloride testing is used to test the dryness of concrete. In fact, the American Society for Testing and Materials, commonly referred to as the ASTM, had a written standard that must be followed. This anhydrous calcium chloride testing procedure not only helps to test the dryness of concrete, it also assists in determining the suitability of concrete for use.
The ASTMs anhydrous calcium chloride test measure several things, ie, humidity levels and vapor emissions. The test sets guidelines for each measure, eg, vapor emissions should not exceed a certain poundage in a set amount of time, unless stated otherwise by the manufacturer.
This helps to prevent problems down the road like concrete cracking, sagging, erosion, etc. Many industries rely on this testing before installing their products, eg, floor manufacturers. Anhydrous calcium chloride testing is an important quality-check measure of the building industrial – both residential and commercial.
Using Anhydrous Calcium Chloride in Food: Anhydrous calcium chloride is used as a direct food additive. This is not possible with the solid form of calcium chloride, which has to be dissipated in water and used in a solution form. Anhydrous calcium chloride is used in a number of ways in food production and manufacturing.
For example, it is put in beverages to give the finished product a more uniform flavor. In the cheese making process, it is used to help form curds. In harvesting and gathering fruit and vegetable crops, it is used to treat these foods in a myriad of ways.
